Tailor-made air distribution at Weidebloem primary school
The challenge
Several years ago, primary school de Weidebloem in Hoogeveen received ITHO WTW units installed between the joists supporting the school's flat roof. The air from the units flowed only between these beams and not through the entire room as desired. The students who were in the middle of the air flow sometimes had to sit in the classroom with their coats on because of the draughts and cold. The teachers therefore turned off the units. This created a shortage of fresh air and people suffered from headaches and stinging eyes. In CO2 measurements, PPM values* between 1600 and 1800 were observed, while in an indoor space, around 1000 PPM is the maximum permissible.
"The students who were in the middle of the airstream,
sometimes had to sit in class with coats on because of the draughts and cold."
The solution
Vlint investigated the situation and supplied a custom-made air distribution system. The air from the ITHO cabinets is now blown out via woven textile air distribution hoses suspended under the beam construction of the roof. The advantage of the woven material is that the freshly drawn in outside air mixes with the air in the classroom through millions of small openings. This creates no draughts, but a homogeneous distribution of air. Moreover, because the system hangs under the roof beams instead of between them, the beams no longer block the distribution of air.
The result
Now that the ITHO cabinets can be switched back on, teachers and pupils suffer less often from headaches or stinging eyes. Jan Bollemaat, property consultant and responsible for installation technology at De Weidebloem primary school, is pleased with Vlint's approach. "The air distribution system is a wonderful addition to the existing situation. Vlint really delivered customised work here."
Bollemaat appreciates the fact that Vlint carried out the project from A to Z itself. "Vlint investigated the problematic situation on site and had its mechanical engineers calculate what was needed for a solution. Vlint then designed and supplied the air distribution system, including connections and hoses. Vlint mechanics also took care of the assembly. So, as a property consultant, I didn't have to worry about the project at all."
* Parts Per Million. By comparison, outdoor CO2 is typically 360 PPM.
