Nanowave filter by Vlint proves to be the solution for AFAS Leusden
The AFAS clubhouse in Leusden consists of various buildings with a total size of 62,000 m2 and was completed in 2020. A large professional theater building and an office building are the main components of the complex. Additionally, there is space for demonstrations, sports, training, studios, and catering. The design was based on a future-proof concept, reflecting an increasingly digitalized and sustainable society. And it was successful; the complex is one of the most sustainable office buildings in the Netherlands!
High Humidity Disrupts Filtersystem
During the construction of the complex, Vlint was contacted by installer Homij to supply the filters for air treatment. Even after the project’s completion in 2020, when maintenance was taken over by the AFAS team itself, Vlint remained the fixed supplier for air filters. After the complex became operational, a challenge arose in this area. One of the air handling units, located near the pond on the premises, frequently displayed a 'dirty filter' warning under high humidity conditions (e.g., during fog). The reason? In this situation, the filters absorbed too much water.
Increased Energy Consumption Due to Moisture
Too much water in the filters causes droplet formation, leading to higher resistance (∆p), which results in less air passing through the filters. The fans then have to work harder to maintain ventilation in the building, increasing energy consumption. Moreover, such an amount of moisture in the air handling units can negatively impact the lifespan of the units and internal components, for example, through rust formation. Custom-made droplet separators were installed for AFAS, but unfortunately, this did not yield the desired result.
Energy Savings with Nanowave Filters
Together with Olaf Schipper, product manager for filtration, and Ronald ter Burg, account manager at Vlint, a solution was considered. Olaf proposed replacing the current filters with Nanowave filters. These filters are developed with sustainability and energy savings in mind. They are made of special nanofibers that reduce resistance while increasing efficiency. This results in energy savings, higher air quality, longer lifespan, and other benefits.

Successful Test with Nanowave
In addition to the above advantages, Olaf expected the properties of the Nanowave filter to also provide better performance under humid conditions. The filters were installed for a test, and what did it show? The 'dirty filter' warnings were gone! On two particularly humid, foggy days, the ∆p (resistance) was measured and remained stable. The finer fibers of the Nanowave filter ensured that the mist particles were better distributed across the filter, preventing droplet formation.
Expected Energy Savings of 70%
The Nanowave filters have now been in the LBK for some time. Romeo van Baak from AFAS reports being pleased with the results so far. He is curious about the results of the Nanowave filters over a longer period. While regular filters need to be replaced every year, Nanowave filters last up to three times as long. Additionally, the expected energy savings in this specific situation is approximately 70%. Romeo looks forward to confirming this in practice. He is also very open to other innovations in the field of sustainability.
