When do you use the panel filter?

Panel filters can also be used as pre-filters. Prefilters are designed to protect fine dust filters by trapping larger particles, such as coarse dust, in the intake and recirculation air. However, the combination of cardboard and outdoor humidity raises questions: how resistant is cardboard really to moisture, mould and bacteria? And how long until a cardboard filter breaks down and loses its shape, allowing dirty air to flow past the filter and result in air pollution?
